paths to walk with us
Rebecca Solnit writes: “[l]anguage is like a road, it cannot be perceived all at once because it unfolds in time, whether heard or read. This narrative or temporal element has made writing and walking resemble each other.” paths to walk with us is a commonplace book that takes this resemblance between reading, writing, and walking as its starting place.
Traditionally, a commonplace book is kept by an individual reader who gathers together a variety of excerpts, quotations, notes and observations on a given topic. This book was made with contributions from a number of different readers, writers, and artists. It collects original writing, anecdotes, observations, quotations, and artworks, creating a web of interconnected trails through the forest of ideas about walking.
Published for Walking, a summer group show at PDX Contemporary Art, with contributions from Christopher Baird, Nick Blosser, Victoria Haven, Kristen Miller, Alfredo Jaar, Ariana Jacob, Elizabeth Knight, Elizabeth Smith, Barbara Stafford, and Nell Warren.
