OBJECT INDEX TO MARX'S COAT | Participatory Index Project with Portland State University Students & Ariana Jacob, 2017

This project is an inventory of all the objects mentioned in an essay about Karl Marx's famous coat, the one he wore while working on his massive research + writing project that became Capital Vol. 1 & 2. It was made with students who chose objects from the essay to create out of clay. Since the text was all about exchange value and commodity fetishism, each student ascribed a 'value' to their object when finished. Some objects could be exchanged for money, others for something of equal value as assessed by the viewer, others still for the cost of the course in which the work was made.Â
